Random #2_Sailing in Stanford
Over the past weekend the sailing team and I went to a regatta at Stanford. After a long grueling drive from LA to the San Mateo Marriott, we were able to relax in the hot tub and talk about the upcoming racing. Before regattas we talk about different factors that might affect or racing at the venue. Some of these factors are wind speed, current, and where the course might be on the water. Unlike the forecast, it turned out to be a windy day, which in my opinion makes sailing easier. During this day our team were getting consistent scores in the top 10, which means that we were most likely in the top three. Sailing is like golf, the least amount of points win. Nearing the end of the day we were in second place, with University of Hawaii in first and Stanford in third. Stanford prides in themselves always winning, so they were pretty pissed. Our regattas are fleet racing, which means that 18 boat are racing against each other. Instead of sailing their own race, Stanford started to go out of their way to mess us up at the start. Except, each time we were able to recover and get top five. After racing that day we were pretty excited and ready to sail the next day.
Waking up that morning we checked the wind report and realized that the day we be nothing like the first day. The forecast showed that it was going to be 0 to 5 knots of wind, compared to the previous day’s wind of 8 to 12 knots of wind. This difference in wind really affects our strategy and who will be on the boat. I am personally too heavy for this type of wind as a crew, so I swapped with someone lighter than me. The day was very difficult to watch because of the lack of wind and how long the races took. During this day they were many mistake that we made that affected our score enough to drop us from second to third. Unfortunately, Stanford A boat was about to thrive and win most of the races that day bring them to first place. Both Hawaii and us had a couple of horrible races, which dropped us both a place down. Even though it sucks that we didn't get second, we are still happy with receiving third at a qualifying regatta for our conference championship. The championship will be in Hawaii this year and hopefully we will qualify for nationals in Norfolk, Virginia.
Yo thanks for taking us through your trip Will. Cool to hear about the sailing team and what you guys are up to. Seems like a lot of travel!
ReplyDeleteWow I didn't know how strategic sailing was! Thanks for sharing your experience, looks like you and the team are on to great things. All the best for your upcoming races!
ReplyDeleteHi Will!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting sport! When I was at Boston University, I remember walking to class alongside the Charles River and watching countless sailing practices and competitions. It must take so much skill, physically and mentally, to be a successful team in such a complicated sport. Good luck with Hawaii and Virginia!
Hi, Will! I've never tried sailing, and I don't know much about it, but I've always wanted to try it because I grew up in Hawaii where it's a pretty popular sport. Congrats on third place, and good luck with your future races!
