Some say San Diego has the best burrito, but I beg to differ. From experience San Francisco has the best burritos. My personal favorite burrito is the carnitas burrito with pinto beans, cheese, Spanish rice, guacamole, a little bit of sour cream, and either hot sauce or jalapeƱos. All in a large flour tortilla steamed with the cheese, which will not break ounce it has everything inside. The rice being the base, I believe makes or breaks a burrito. If the rice is too dry then it ruins the taste of everything else. Next comes pinto beans, which can’t have too much liquid on them when they are put in the burrito. The greasy, juicy, and crispy carnitas comes next – chopped and pilled onto the burrito. One of the most important part of the burrito besides the meat is the guacamole. The guacamole must have a taste lime and chunks of tomato and onion in it with visible chopped cilantro in it. Most importantly it is made with fresh avocados. Sour cream, for me, doesn’t necessarily need to be in a burrito, but it is nice when it is. Lastly, the spice of burrito – jalapeƱos or hot sauce. It depends how spicy I want my burrito, but I usually go for the hot sauce. This make up of different ingredients created my perfect burrito, which can be found a Gordos Taqueria.

My go to spot for burritos is Gordos Taqueria, where everything is freshly made every day. There are five locations in the Bay Area, three of them being in San Francisco. Since everything is made at location, each location is slightly different when it comes to tastes. The one closest to my house always has the best carnitas and steak, while the other one’s carnitas and steak are a little too greasy for my taste, but they give a slightly bigger portion of protein than the other place. Even though Gordos is great, there is also a slew of great burrito spots in the Mission district in San Francisco. La Taqueria and Taqueria La Farolito are a couple of the better spots in the mission. These spots are cheap and great tasting, which I believe to be the best quality of any taqueria.

  1. Thanks for this information my man. I'm working full time in SF so I'm going to have to try this place. Sounds like a hit. You've probably already heard of / been to Benito's here at USC (Autozone taco stand guy) and that's great as well. Always in for an Al Pastor Burrito!
